News Update: All at sea –headed for Malawi
July/August, 2010
In mid-July, the Thai cargo ship –XUTRA BHUM – slipped out of Melbourne carrying two shrink-wrapped pallettes piled high with goods bound for Blantyre airport, and then for delivery by mini-bus to Nogwe in southern Malawi where they’ll be unpacked and shared between our Australian Primary School at Nogwe and our adjoining Australian Progressive Academy (Secondary School).
The consignment includes a large canvas marquee; another petrol powered generator (the 4th) and associated spares; over 1,300 books to help stock the two school libraries; 12 dozen pairs of reading glasses and cases; puzzles and other games; some 2 dozen basketballs, two computer printers and ink cartridges; exercise books and coloured pencils; quantities of infant and other children’s clothing and woollen dolls; rugs; soaps and even some brooms!
The huge collection of books followed a special book drive which was especially helped by the Cranbourne Secondary College in Victoria. These will be especially treasured by a lively young community of some one thousand children to whom books in bulk are sights rarely seen. They’ll receive them in about 50 days time.
