School AIDS Day 2010
School AIDS Mass
The Archbishop and Director of the Catholic Education Office invite all schools in the Melbourne
Archdiocese to remember people who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. It is estimated that of the 40
million people living with HIV/AIDS globally, more than 10 million are between the ages of 15 and 24.
Each year a school within the Archdiocese is invited to host the Mass and this year we will host the Mass
on August 5. This is not an individual school event but one held on behalf of the Catholic system. Mr Elder
or his representative will be present along with guests from the schools in our local community.
This Mass is an opportunity for schools to inform students about the pandemic and related issues and to
use the occasion for prayer and reflection for those who are infected with and by the disease. In the lead
up to the Mass, all schools are required to raise awareness emphasising the social justice perspectives of
those affected by the disease.
