Government Funding at a Glance - Having first gone 10 years without it!

Despite the huge sums it poured and continues to pour into the Victorian AIDS Council, and large hand-outs to related services, the Victorian Government limited its financial support to The Australian AIDS Fund Inc through the Department of Human Services to just $7,333.34 per month (GST included).

It was to cover our TWO supported accommodation facility services, our respite camps and our innovative educational programmes and publications, staff wages etc included!

For the Year 2000, it was broken down as follows:

  • Information and Advice $733.34 (or approx $24.50 per day)
  • Counselling and Support $2,200 (or approx $73.30 per day)
  • Supportive Accommodation $4,400 (or approx $146 per day or just $15 per bed per day)

Then of course there were the wage on costs, various insurances, building maintenance, utility bills, administration, volunteer training, telephone accounts, outreach costs, etc.

The combination of hugely disproportionate and lopsided funding of the Victorian AIDS Council coupled with the realities of inertia, political clout and bullying; and an absence of material and promised support from Catholic Social Services Victoria led to these valuable services being lost. The VAC income is around 3 and a half million dollars a year, and it's clamouring for more!!!

It'll probably get it.
